One Simple Return That Changes Everything

Where to hit your returns of serve (plus special Women's Dubs clinic in Feb!)

Hi Friend!

Let's talk about one of the most underutilized strategies in pickleball: where to place your return of serve. When you step onto the court, even if you have no idea who your opponents are, I want you to decide as a team: where are we returning the ball, at least initially.

🎯 This Week's Tip: The Deep Return to the Middle

When you're returning serve, your first instinct might be to aim down the line or cross-court to a corner (and there are merits to both). But here's what the pros know: a deep return right down the middle is often your best friend.

Why?

  • Creates confusion - Both opponents have to decide who's taking it
  • Limits angles - They can't attack you as aggressively from the center
  • Buys you time - Keeps them back while you get to the kitchen line
  • Reduces errors - More net clearance than aiming for sidelines

Try this next time you play: Aim for that deep middle spot about 2-3 feet inside the baseline, right between your opponents. Watch how it disrupts their rhythm and gives you control of the point from the start.

When the returner returns middle, the returners partner should cover a big middle - take a big step towards the center line to create some pressure and handle any incoming drives down the middle.

The key to the return is depth! A shallow middle return is an invitation for an attack. Deep and down the middle? That's our target! 🎯

Pickleball Herding Dog

Your Mind Needs A Job A sports psychology idea I've been sitting with lately, in my own game and with the players I coach, is that your mind needs a productive job when you compete. We're a bit like herding dogs. Left to our own devices we can become restless and scattered, but give us a job and suddenly we're calm and focused. We talk so much about not overthinking, and that's true. But trying not to overthink will almost certainly cause you to do exactly that. Here's what I've noticed: most...

10K Subscribers + June Half-Day Camps Are Back Athena Pickleball hit 10,000 YouTube subscribers this week, which honestly feels surreal considering that was my entire goal for 2026. What’s been most surprising isn’t the number itself, though. It’s how much building a YouTube channel has mirrored learning pickleball: you’re often wrong about what will work progress takes longer than you think consistency matters more than motivation and sometimes you just have to keep making one more ball So...

What To Do When Your Third Shot Drop Stops Working I referenced this mind-blowing idea in last weeks email, but lean in, because this one's wild: You CANNOT WIN a match if you cannot make a third shot. Ok, technically, if the other team misses eleven returns in a row... maybe. But statistically? Not a strategy I'd take to the bank. I was reminded of this the hard way at my last tournament. My drop was off for a full 3 game match. Same shot, same result, getting worse by the point. If you've...
