Want to be more aggressive? Stop hitting so hard.

Want to be more aggressive? Stop hitting so hard.

A lot of players come out swinging because they learn pretty quickly that hitting harder can mean winning more points.

And sometimes it does.

But if you want to improve past a certain level, you have to learn how to hit hard, when to hit hard... and when NOT to hit hard.

Because aggression isn’t just about power. It’s about wisdom.

Here are 4 ways I think about being aggressively smart:

  1. Go for a bigger serve. This is one place where taking a little more risk can immediately put pressure on your opponent and set up the rest of the point.
  2. Hit your drives at 70%. Instead of trying to blow a hole through someone, use your drive to create an advantage. Make them volley from an uncomfortable position, get a weaker ball back, and look to do something with the next one.
  3. Use speed-ups to create combinations. Your first attack doesn’t have to win the point. It’s a big mindset shift, but often the job of the speed-up is simply to create the next ball, the one you actually want to put away.
  4. Counterattack. Aggression doesn’t always mean being the person who starts the attack. Being ready to handle pace and turn your opponent’s offense against them is one of the smartest ways to be dangerous.

The better you get, the less aggression is about hitting every ball hard and the more it’s about knowing how to create pressure, and what to do with the advantage once you have it.

Hey Friend! Today I want to talk about time - THE most important currency 💰 in pickleball. Time on a pickleball court works a little like money. You can earn it, spend it wisely, or blow through it before you even realize it’s gone. It can richly apply pressure to your opponent or leave you feeling flat broke. The good news? Improving means that you learn how to buy yourself more of it. No credit card required. Here are 5 ways to slow the game down and be more in control of every rally. 1....

You want a fun pickleball party trick AND a reliable serve? Learn to serve with your eyes closed. Ok, I’m not actually suggesting you do this in a game, but the concept holds. The serve is the one shot in pickleball where you have control over all the variables. No one is attacking you. No weird spin is coming at you. You’re not late or off balance. You have the ball, you choose when to start, and you get to execute the exact same motion every single time. And yet I frequently see players...

You might be avoiding games that could actually help you. We all want to get into the better games. I hear some version of it all the time: The games aren't good enough. This person isn't good enough to drill with me. That person is too good for me. And yes, level matters. You need appropriate competition and practice partners to improve. But I also think we spend way too much time evaluating whether the people across the net are giving us the right experience, and not enough time asking:...
